Thesis topic: Spatiotemporal dynamic of tree methane fluxes in upland forest My research project focuses on characterizing the internal methane (CH4) dynamics within tree trunks. The objective is to understand the mechanisms of transport, in situ production, and consumption within the stem, in order to determine how these internal processes dictate net methane fluxes in temperate forests.

He is PI of the [ICOS](https://www.icos-cp.eu) class 1 ecosystem site [FR-Hes](https://meta.icos-cp.eu/resources/stations/ES_FR-Hes) and is key developer of the ecosystem model [MuSICA](https://ecofun.ispa.bordeaux.inrae.fr/index.php/musica-model/) as well as of the global land surface model [CABLE-POP](https://cable.readthedocs.io/en/latest/). This allows him to combine measurements and modelling to understand and describe mathematically the processes behind the exchanges between the biosphere and the atmosphere, scaling from single leaves over fluxes measured and modelled at ecosystems up to the continental and global scale.

As the lead technical manager, I am responsible for the "tree" component of the experimental instrumented agroforestry workshop at La Bouzule (54). This workshop is part of the national AnaEE France network. Since 2020, recurring funding for the workshop has been provided by INRAE's EcoDIV department and INRAE's Research Infrastructure Delegation (DISC). Its aim is to understand the added value of interactions between woody species and field crops (mixtures of nitrogen-fixing trees/non-fixing trees, nitrogen-fixing trees/non-fixing crops, and non-fixing trees/nitrogen-fixing crops), in order to reduce inputs through the complementarity of the different species.

DESTOUET Gabriel

Post-doc - INRAE

My research focuses on developing new computational methods and analytical tools to process flux tower data. By advancing our understanding of turbulence’s role in the transport of gas and energy, I aim to improve the accuracy of estimated fluxes and their relationship to true ecosystem fluxes. This research ultimately aims at improving ecosystem modeling and monitoring.

I am interested in the positive (facilitation, complementarity) and negative (competition) interactions affecting the functioning of trees integrated into agricultural plots (alley cropping agroforestry) compared to forest monocultures. Tree functioning is studied through all the factors contributing to its biomass production: primary and secondary aboveground and belowground growth, architecture, phenology, resource use efficiency, etc. These determinants of productivity are estimated at the organ level (leaves, branches, wood, roots), at the tree level, and then extrapolated to the stand level. Another aspect of my work concerns the study of the services provided by trees in agricultural environments: carbon storage, microclimate buffering, increased biodiversity, improved soil water management, etc.

PhD-Agroparistech

Thesis topic: Effects of species mixtures including a nitrogen-fixing species on biomass production and above- and belowground allocation in temperate forest and agroforestry systems. My doctoral project aims to investigate the functioning and performance of mixed forest and agroforestry plantations integrating nitrogen-fixing species in temperate climates. Building on the long-term Agro-TCR experimental site in La Bouzule (2014–2022), it examines the temporal dynamics of interspecific interactions. The research is structured around two complementary components: (i) the assessment of aboveground biomass and wood production across multiple scales, and (ii) the analysis of belowground biomass allocation among root categories and associated nitrogen stocks. The overall objective is to improve understanding of allocation strategies and complementarity mechanisms in order to optimize the design of productive and sustainable mixed systems.
