PhD student - INRAE

Thesis topic: Factors influencing the movement of large ungulates within a mosaic of forest landscapes and the implications for the success of stand regeneration I am studying the movements and resource selection of deer in order to better understand the spatial and temporal variations in browsing pressure on forest regeneration. In this context, I am investigating the influence of artificial protections or landscape management on deer behaviour and the resulting impact on the consumption of young trees.

BOURREAU Quentin

RESEARCH ENGINEER INRAE

I am in charge of managing the PREPI project (2025-2028). The objective of this project is to improve the technical, economic, ergonomic, and social performance of forest plantations in the Grand Est region. My responsibilities include coordinating and monitoring the activities of the project partners (organizing meetings, writing meeting minutes, tracking tasks, etc.). Another responsibility involves organizing the task of "Ensuring successful plant establishment." This includes organizing forestry work with the borrowers, receiving the necessary materials for the plantation from suppliers, and writing protocols and reports for the installation of the experimental sites.

I study the possibility of creating a national network of “Continuous Cover Forestry Schools” (FIE). FIEs work to develop mixed forestry with continuous cover through co-production and knowledge sharing between various stakeholders. I am also interested in these initiatives from the perspective of socio-ecological transition and forest commons.

LONGUETAUD Fleur

RESEARCH SCIENTIST-INRAE

My main research topic is wood quality. I am mainly interested in round wood, from the standing tree in the forest to the sawmill. My activities are divided into two parts: 1. developing innovative methods for measuring wood properties; 2. modelling wood properties. Regarding the first point, I mainly use X-ray or RGB image analysis. I am collaborating on this with a computer science research laboratory (Loria), and we are implementing traditional methods (e.g., TreeTrace project) as well as methods increasingly based on artificial intelligence such as CNNs and Vision Transformers (e.g., Biomtrace project). More recently, I have expanded my field of research to include biometric traceability of timber based on the analysis of photos of log cross-sections as part of a project with ONF and Loria (Biomtrace project). On the second point, I collaborate with my colleagues who are specialists in growth modelling, as modelling wood quality depends heavily on growing conditions. As part of the Baccfire project, I am working with ONF to classify tree species based on their anatomical, physical, architectural and ecological characteristics, among others. The aim is to form groups of species that are relatively homogeneous and can be used in generic modelling approaches, such as carbon flows in the forest-wood sector. Another objective is to identify species that are interesting in terms of both climate change resistance and wood quality. For the link with the chemical properties of wood, I collaborate with Lermab (e.g., ExtraForEst project on the resource of forest extractives) and for the connection with the quality of sawn or peeled wood with colleagues from LaBoMaP in Cluny (e.g., TreeTrace project).

My research studies the circulation of wood products around the world, at different scales. My work focuses on issues related to the dynamics of international trade in wood products, changes in wood demand basins over time and space, and the structure and evolution of wood value chains. I study the rise of the forest-based bioeconomy, the impact of economic, political and geopolitical shocks on the structure of trade in wood products, and the evolution of the forest-wood sector. I teach courses on issues related to the forest-wood sector, the bioeconomy, and international trade in wood products at AgroParisTech. I am also in charge of the major in ‘Forest Information and Resource Strategies’ at AgroParisTech (FIRS ; master 2 training).

Thesis topic: Monitoring the regeneration of French forests My research is about monitoring natural regeneration of main forest tree species at the scale of the French territory, using national forest inventory data. I aim at identifying environmental drivers (climate, soil, ungulates) that may cause spatial variability in occurrence, abundance and species composition of the regeneration layer.

I manage a network of experimental silvicultural plots for oak and beech across the northern half of France. This includes maintaining the network, implementing measurement protocols, applying silvicultural treatments (thinning), and managing the data. I am also the unit’s “stem analysis” lead, focusing on the retrospective study of tree growth (height and diameter) based on tree-ring analysis of collected wood samples (cross-sections or cores).
